* Zinc helps with diarrhea in children: study *
Treatment with zinc supplements can cut the severity and duration of acute or persistent diarrhea in children, a study shows. Further research, however, is needed to determine exactly how zinc produces its anti-diarrheal effects, the researchers note in the February issue of Pediatrics.
The findings stem from a pooled analysis of data from 22 relevant studies, including 16 that focused on the benefits of zinc in 15,231 children with acute diarrhea and six that looked at 2,968 children with persistent diarrhea.

Cellular Analysis to establish Nutritional
A Cellular Analysis to establish Nutritional
Requirements for Trace Minerals and other Nutrients
From routine annual physicals to emergency hospitalization, blood tests are viewed as important tools to help arrive at a medical diagnosis, and later to monitor the progress of various treatments prescribed.
Medical science is well aware of the many limitations, i.e. close mineral tolerances in serum test samples that are frequently maintained while patients are seemingly healthy, when they go through a medical crises, or when they are terminally ill. Unfortunately, this delays or prevents amore accurate diagnosis, or it requires other, perhaps more expensive diagnostic tools - to the detriment of the patient and the efficiency and cost of the Health Care System.
As changes in lifestyle, diet, stress, genetics, injuries or aging start to affect a person's well-being, intracellular chemistry reflects many of these changes through variations in nutritional levels, abnormal mineral ratios, or general biochemical imbalances.
Blood chemistry on the other hand - with some exceptions - remains largely unchanged and unaffected, and would give a patient a clean bill of health. Conventional medicine would now offer the patient a vast array of pharmaceutical solutions, aimed at alleviating the medical "symptoms", and any side effects that should arise from the treatments.
A more sensible approach for a patient would be to consult a nutrition-oriented practitioner that has the resources to pinpoint the actual intracellular problem areas instead, and to resolve any chemical
excesses, deficiencies, or imbalances nutritionally. If indicated, chiropractic / spinal manipulation, or (electro-) acupuncture could be another consideration. While gene therapy had promised to be aradically different approach in the treatment of genetically-driven diseases, the technology has thus far been a major disappointment, so its implementation is yet futuristic for most medical conditions.
Although intracellular measurements have a much larger test range compared to serum panels, the actual reference or "healthy" range is much narrower with Acu-Cell Analysis, even in comparisonto Red Blood Cell or White Blood Cell analysis since it establishes the most person-specific valuesby using the patient's own genetic reference. As a result, Acu-Cell Technology represents one of themost cost-efficient and accurate tools to:
• Establish optimal nutritional requirements within the tested criteria,
• Measure the cellular effects of various diets, supplements, or drugs,
• Assess the impact of disease processes on biochemical levels (and vice versa),
• Monitor an individual's nutritional status for maintenance.
The measuring technique is based on testing the evoked nerve point potential of all cell receptors that correspond to essential trace minerals. The calculated average is used to establish a reference range and mineral ratio profile. Measurements can be taken along the spine (done in veterinarian medicine), or at the extremities in human patients. The measuring current is limited to a few microamps, which is totally painless and harmless, even when testing infants or patients with pacemakers.
Each electric nerve potential tested varies with the intracellular level of the nutrient it corresponds toand changes as the matching chemical is increased or decreased through supplementation, drugs, diet, and various disease processes. Under certain circumstances - particularly when excessivelylow - serum and cellular levels of trace minerals are quite close, however by nature they represent different physiological and pathological processes, so they need to be interpreted differently.
When compared to serum levels, hair, saliva or urine analysis, Acu-Cell Analysis will always reflect a patient's mineral status more accurately, since its values are genetically referenced to that patient.
In contrast, blood tests are generally matched to 95% of the population average, although many labtests never reach that figure. Thyroid panels are one example of being well below that percentage, with actual patient symptoms being nowhere near 95% of matching serum values.
Calcium requirements are another of many other examples that cannot be established throughconventional or routine blood tests, so recommendations are also based on population averagesinstead of individual requirements. This of course can have disastrous consequences for patients who either suffer from any number of disorders that prevent normal calcium absorption, or for those
who suffer from calcium overload. Acu-Cell Analysis on the other hand wouldn't be suitable for anti-body screening, nor is it as accurate for blood sugar tests and other blood-specific measurements.
Acu-Cell Analysis measures 24 essential trace minerals, including Vitamin B12,stomach acid levels, thyroid and adrenal status, total lipids and HDL, LDL & VLDLfractions, anti-oxidant factors (rutin and hesperidin), and other values. The analysis takes about 30 minutes, and results are given to the patient at that time. ¤

Safe Eating and Drinking
Safe Eating and Drinking
We should be particularly aware of toxins when it comes to food and water.
organic food can be an effective way to reduce exposure to toxins. Is Any Water Safe To Drink?Almost all water that has passed through a municipal water treatment plant has been treated with chlorine and/or chlorine dioxide. This brings several chlorinated pollutants into our homes every day. Trihalomethanes, formed when chlorine combines with organic matter in water, are the most common. One trihalomethane is chloroform, which has been linked to liver, kidney and nervous system damage, as well as cancer.
Chloroform is released as a vapor from hot running chlorinated water, such as in a shower. Heavy metals used in water pipes can bring lead, cadmium, copper, iron and zinc to our taps.Filters can remove some, but not all, contaminants in water. To determine which type of filter is best for your needs, you first should check with your local water department, or have your water independently tested to determine what pollutants are in your water source and also to learn what treatment the water receives from the municipality. There are many less-than-scrupulous vendors of water filters; look for the one that gives you the most information.Buying bottled water is no guarantee of purity. Regulations governing bottled water are inconsistent from place to place. The better bottled water is in glass (plastic leaches chemicals into water) and lists the source of the water and what treatment, if any, is performed before bottling.

USANA NUTRIMEAL & BARS (low glycemic)
FROM ASK THE SCIENCTIST - USANA NUTRIMEAL & BARS (low glycemic)
Question: What is the glycemic index?
Answer:
The glycemic index (GI) is a way of measuring the rate at which carbohydrates are broken down and
appear in the blood as simple sugars. In general, the more refined and processed the food, the
faster the food is broken down and the higher the GI.
High GI foods act rapidly to influence blood sugar, providing quick energy. However, this energy is
usually short lived & hunger soon returns often leading to overeating & weight gain.
Low GI foods effect blood sugar more slowly and steadily. These foods provide greater satiety and
longer lasting, more consistent energy, making eating less (and maintaining weight) easier.
Question: What is Nutrimeal (Nutrition Drink Mix)?
Answer:
Nutrimeal is a balanced, low-glycemic meal-replacement drink that includes complex carbohy-drates,
protein, fiber, & many micronutrients. Each serving contains 230 calories & 7 grams fat.
Nutrimeal is currently available in Wild Strawberry, Dutch Chocolate, and French Vanilla.
Question: Why were the Nutrimeal drink mixes changed?
Answer:
The Nutrimeal drinks and Nutrition Bars are snack and meal replacement Macro-Optimizers. They are
specifically designed to be balanced with respect to carbohydrates, proteins and fats. They are
formulated and tested to be low-glycemic snacks and meal replacements. Because of their satiety
value and their stabilizing effect on blood glucose, these products are ideal for weight management
and improved dietary control.
Almost without exception, all health experts will agree that a healthy, balanced diet consists of
carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in a range of about 40-60%, 15-30%, and 15-30%, respectively.
Carbohydrates should predominate and are healthiest when there is a good variety and balance of
fiber, complex carbohydrates and starches, and sugars. Protein intake should be moderate and include
a variety. The majority of fat intake should be unsaturated, although a minimal amount of saturated
fat is necessary and important.
The macronutrient content of the Nutrimeals and Nutrition Bars is carefully selected to provide a
low-glycemic nutritious snack or meal that represents the balance of a healthy diet. The Nutrimeal
balance is approximately 50% carbohydrates (half complex and fiber, half sugars), 25% protein and
25% fat. This balance is essential to the purpose and function of the product. (Yes, even the sugar
is important, just as it is in a mixed diet of fruits, vegetables and grains.)
Hopefully, with a clearer understanding of the purpose of the products, the following explanation of
the changes made to the Macro-Optimizer products will make better sense:
The previous Nutrimeal (Nutrigy in Canada) formulations were not manufactured or intended to be used
as full meal replacements and did not meet government regulations for such. With the success of the
RESET concept, there was growing concern over the safety and health of people using these products
as exclusive sources of nutrition. The Nutrimeals were re-formulated to meet U.S., Canadian and
Australian meal replacement regulations. These changes required an increase in total calories per
serving, increased fat content, and changes to the vitamin/mineral mix (the Canadian products
contain one mix and the U.S./ANZ products contain a different one to meet unique regulations). Also,
due to feedback from customers and a couple of years experience with the previous product mixtures,
we broadened the spectrum of proteins to make it more balanced and reduce overall soy protein (for
those who prefer an all-vegetarian protein, the Vanilla flavor is still all-soy). This improves
flavor for many and reduces the incidence of soy-related GI distress that some people previously
experienced. We also decreased the overall fiber dosage, making it less than the mixture of
products, but more than the previous Nutrimeal alone. To increase bulking capacity and reduce
constipation problems, we increased insoluble fiber in relation to soluble fiber in the new
Nutrimeals. Finally, we increased the electrolyte content (sodium and potassium) to assure adequacy.
These changes appear major, but in reality two scoops of Nutrimeal is quite similar to the previous
formulation. This way, those who want to continue mixing Fibergy, Soyamax, and/or OptOmega can
continue to do so by using a scoop or two of each. To meet regulations and for simplicity
(especially in the first 5 days), three scoops or a packet now make it an easy-to-use meal replacement.
Question: Why does USANA use sugar alcohol in the Nutrition Bars?
Answer:
Sugar alcohols - also know as polyols - are neither sugars nor alcohols. They are carbohydrates with
a chemical structure that partially resembles sugar and partially resembles alcohol, but they do not
contain ethanol (as alcoholic beverages do). They are incompletely absorbed and metabolized by the
body, and consequently contribute fewer calories. Their calorie content ranges from 1.5-3 calories
per gram, compared to 4 calories per gram for sucrose or other sugars.
Some of the more commonly used sugar alcohols include sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, maltitol, and
maltitol syrup. They occur naturally in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, but are also
commercially produced from other carbohydrates. Along with adding a sweet taste, they may perform a
variety of functions in foods.
Due to their incomplete absorption, sugar alcohols produce a lower glycemic response than sucrose or
glucose and therefore may be useful in diabetic diets. Also, sugar alcohols do not contribute to
tooth decay.
Question: What is Dextrose (as an excipient)?
Answer:
Dextrose, a simple sugar, is used in some formulas as a binder, disintegrant, or coating agent. The
amount used is so small that it would take several tablets to provide even a single calorie.
Question: What is Xylitol?
Answer:
Xylitol occurs naturally in many fruits and vegetables and is even produced by the human body during
normal metabolism. It is produced commercially from plants (such as birch and other hard wood trees
and fibrous vegetation). It has the same sweetness as sucrose but only 2/3 of the calories. It
dissolves quickly, produces a cooling sensation in the mouth, and has no unpleasant aftertaste.
Xylitol is currently approved for use in foods, pharmaceuticals, and oral health products in more
than 35 countries. It is used in foods like chewing gum, gum drops and hard candy, and in
pharmaceuticals and oral health products like throat lozenges, cough syrups, children's chewable
multivitamins, toothpastes, and mouthwashes. In the US, xylitol is approved as a direct food
additive for use in foods for special dietary uses (ie. diabetic candies).
In the body, xylitol is formed as an intermediate during the formation of xylulose. Ingested xylitol
is also converted to xylulose. Xylulose then enters the pentose-phosphate cycle of carbohydrate
metabolism. This is a normal metabolic process in human energy production.
Benefits of Xylitol
* Good taste with no unpleasant aftertaste
* Helps reduce the development of dental caries
* Reduces plaque formation
* Increases salivary flow to aid in the repair of damaged tooth enamel
* Provides 1/3 fewer calories than sugar (sucrose, fructose, or glucose)
* May be useful as an alternative to sugar for people with diabetes on the advice of their
health care provider
Question: Is there caffeine in the Dutch Chocolate Nutrimeal or the Peanut Butter Crunch bar?
Answer:
The Dutch Chocolate Nutrimeal & Peanut Butter Crunch Bars do not have any added caffeine, but they
may contain a miniscule amount due to the chocolate (always less than 1 mg and would be labeled as "0").
Question: Why does USANA use high fructose corn syrup in the Peanut Butter Crunch bars?
Answer:
Some customers have expressed concerns about the high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) used in the bars.
Contrary to some of the alarmist articles, HFCS is almost identical in composition to sucrose
(approx. 50% fructose and 50% glucose). Yes, it is cheaper than sucrose and also has a better
mouthfeel and texture which makes it a valuable product in appropriate uses. But, as always in
nutrition, it is a matter of context.
Like sugar, there is nothing inherently unhealthy or evil about HFCS itself. It is a matter of total
diet and the context in which it is used. One reason it is often demonized is because it is now the
sweetener used in sodas and fruit drinks (if we were still using sugar as we were in the 1970's, we
would be having this conversation about the evils of sucrose). One of the reasons we are having
diffulty with obesity and our excess calorie consumption may be due to the popularity of super-sized
sodas and fruit-drinks. In this context, HFCS is a problem in the same way it would be if we were
still using sucrose. But it isn't so much the fault of the ingredient as it is the way we are using it.
The bottom line: 8-10 grams of HFCS in the context of an otherwise nutrient dense food product is
not the same issue as 220 grams of extra calories in a couple of non-nutritive "Big Gulps."
Also, it is not necessarily valid to use research about fructose and HFCS in the same breath. As
stated before, HFCS is similar to sucrose in structure and metabolism, and much of this research has
been confused and taken out of context.
As with anything in nutrition, dosage is the key. Whereas using saturated fats as a primary source
of fats in the diet would be unhealthy, small amounts from a variety of sources can be used properly
as a healthy blend of overall fat intake.
We continue to advocate common sense and variety and moderation in the diet. It is easy to use
statistics and numbers to misinterpret the value of foods and ingredients. But, if people simply got
more activity, ate less, and ate a balanced and varied diet, many of our current health concerns
would be resolved.
Question: Can I drink coffee or tea during RESET?
Answer:
Yes, as long as it does not contribute additional calories to your daily intake (meaning no sugar or
cream) and you drink the required amount of water.
Question: Can I mix the shakes with skim milk or soymilk instead of water?
Answer:
During the RESET program it is recommended that you mix the shakes only with water. This is
particularly important for those who are trying to lose weight, since using skim milk or soy milk
will increase the caloric level by 250-300 calories a day.
If you prefer to use soymilk, try to use a soymilk with a minimal amount of added sugar (120
calories per cup or less).
Question: Do USANA products contain gluten?
Answer:
USANA tablets and capsules do not contain wheat, oats, rye, barley, or gluten. Soyamax, Peanut
Butter Crunch Nutrition Bar, OptOmega, and TenX Blast are also gluten-free.
Nutrimeal Drinks, Lemon Fibergy Bar, Oatmeal Raisin Nutrition Bar, and Almond Creme Fibergy do
contain gluten.
Peach Mango Fibergy(in the U.S.&Canada)does not contain gluten as of October 2005.
In the Sense skin-care line of products, the Revitalizing Shampoo, Nourishing Conditioner, and Rice
Bran Polisher contain gluten.
* Reduces plaque formation

Do you think you know a leader when you see one?
Do you think you know a leader when you see one? Most companies have the wrong notion of what a leader really is and does. Yet all the development efforts in the world can't deepen the leadership pool if they're focused on the wrong people to begin with.
The brilliant strategist, the creative genius, the financial engineer, and other bright people command attention and respect, and rightfully so. People recognize such individuals' knowledge and intelligence, respect their opinions and ideas, and appear willing to follow them. Combine that great mental ability with a strong work ethic and drive to achieve, and no wonder people are impressed. Unaware of their own shortcomings and driven to succeed, these experts push for leadership jobs at higher and higher levels, persuading -- sometimes even intimidating -- their bosses to promote them.
But many lack essential leadership traits. Although they may succeed for a while when put in charge of other people, without a natural ability to lead, they are unlikely to ever succeed as CEOs or high-level leaders outside their domains of expertise.
What does a natural leader look like at the age of twenty-five or thirty? The usual attempts to answer that question take the form of laundry lists of personal qualities. These are important, but on their own they can be misleading, especially because the same wonderful personal qualities can be found in political leaders, spiritual leaders, and leaders in sports, many of whom don't have an ounce of talent for business. Besides, many personal traits and capabilities associated with leadership in the past are insufficient today. You have to go beyond the list of personal traits you're looking for to include other indications that a person can succeed in leading a business function, business unit, or whole company in the emerging business context.

Let’s help CHF reach their year-end goals
Let’s help CHF reach their year-end goals
Dear USANA Leaders:
This year, a generous donation was given to Children’s Hunger Fund that allowed CHF to open a Midwest regional distribution center in Chicago. This same donor has come forward again and offered a matching grant of $250,000. This means if CHF can raise the other $250,000 by the end of the year, then an additional $250,000 will be given to us for use in our domestic and international programs.
You can play a major part in helping CHF hit their target. In fact, USANA President Dave Wentz has already generously donated $10,000 to assist us in our fundraising goal. Donating is easy. Log on to USANAtoday and add item #899 (Founder’s Challenge) to your Autoship. Or, call Order Express at 1-888-950-9595 to make a donation and be sure to mention that you’d like the donation to go to the Founder’s Challenge.
Help us double the impact this holiday season for children in the U.S. and around the world by assisting in meeting this challenge. As always, your donations are tax-deductible.
We’d like to thank USANA for its generous help and wish you and your family the best this holiday season.
Sincerely,
Dave Phillips

BEEN THINKING ABOUT: ENLIGHTENMENT
BEEN THINKING ABOUT: ENLIGHTENMENT
What does it take to be wise?
In a television commercial for online yellow pages, actor David Carradine plays a guru to a young seeker. When the student asks, “How do I find enlightenment?” the master says, “Yellowbook.com . . . . Everyone is searching for something. . . . After all, it is a material world, and with yellowbook.com, you just type in what and where.”
The ad is insightful. Wisdom does involve the practical use of knowledge to get what we are looking for. The commercial is also right in suggesting that wisdom is more accessible than many of us might have thought.
Could it be that easy? A New Testament writer by the name of James says followers of Christ can have wisdom for the asking. With a promise that sounds too good to be true, he writes, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).
James adds only one condition. He says we need to want to know how to trust God in the middle of our problems (vv.6-8).
Why would we need it? James wrote to people who were struggling with problems that tested their faith (James 1:2-3). As first-century followers of Christ, they probably had counted the cost of religious and social persecution. But they might not have foreseen all of the ways they would disappoint and disillusion one another.
From the beginning, Jesus had taught His disciples to love one another (John 15:17). Yet, just a few years later, His followers were at war with one another (James 4:1-2). With prejudice, hurtful words, and outright hypocrisy, family and friends were acting like enemies.
It is in this conflict-filled setting that James assures his readers that wisdom is closer than they might have thought. But he does more than tell them how to find it. He also shows them how to recognize a wisdom that comes from “above” rather than from “below.”
So what does this mean?
Stop sitting on your ass and get to the point, we have presented opportunity to you, time for a change and yet ignorance and stupid still strikes you. Some people would put a gun to your head and pull the trigger cuz your so dumb... What is MONEY?? actually in your case? What will it take to make money...
YOU MEAN YOU WANT ME TO DO THE WORK FOR YOU
YOUR TO STUPID TO TALK TO FRIENDS
YOU WANT TO BE BROKE ALL YOUR LIFE
YOU DONT HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE SUCCESSFUL
SIGN UP STOP BEING STUPID, LETS MAKE MONEY.. CUT THE BULL CUZ YOU ARE LAZY!!

23 Ways to Reduce Wrinkles
Worried that your skin looks older than you feel?
Here are 23 ways to reduce wrinkles – starting now!
By Colette Bouchez WebMD Feature
Reviewed by Norman Levine, MD
Whether you're 35 and just beginning to see the first signs of aging, or 55 with skin that isn't exactly keeping your birthday a secret, seeking ways to reduce wrinkles is probably on your agenda.
At the same time, experts say, many of us are losing the wrinkle battle, watching helplessly as the glow of youth goes on the dimmer switch.
"Many women as well as men believe that aging skin is inevitable, but with the information and technologies we have today, you really can look as young as you feel," says Robin Ashinoff, MD, a dermatologist at the Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey.
To help put you on the right path, WebMD asked Ashinoff and several other experts what really works to reduce wrinkles. What follows are 23 ways experts say you can make a difference. While some require a visit to the dermatologist, many are things you can do on your own.
How to Reduce Wrinkles: What You Can Do
1. Avoid the sun. It's the No. 1 cause of wrinkles, with dozens of studies documenting the impact. In one study that looked at identical twins, New York plastic surgeon Darrick Antell, MD, found sun exposure was even more important than heredity. Siblings who limited sun time had fewer wrinkles and looked younger overall than their sun-worshiping twins.
2. Wear sunscreen. If you must go out in the sun, the American Academy of Dermatology says, wear sunscreen! It will protect you from skin cancer, and help prevent wrinkles at the same time. Make sure they contain Active ingredients, or the sunscreen is not effective to prevent wrinkles or skin cancer.
3. Don’t smoke. Some of the research is still controversial, but more and more studies are confirming that cigarette smoke ages skin -- mostly by releasing an enzyme that breaks down collagen and elastin, important components of the skin. Sibling studies done at the Twin Research Unit at St. Thomas Hospital in London found the brother or sister who smoked tended to have skin that was more wrinkled and up to 40% thinner than the non-smoker.
4. Get adequate sleep. Yale dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, MD, says that when you don't get enough sleep, the body produces excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. Get enough rest, Perricone says, and you'll produce more HGH (human growth hormone), which helps skin remain thick, more "elastic," and less likely to wrinkle.
5. Sleep on your back. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) cautions that sleeping in certain positions night after night leads to "sleep lines -- wrinkles that become etched into the surface of the skin and don't disappear once you're up. Sleeping on your side increases wrinkles on cheeks and chin, while sleeping face-down gives you a furrowed brow. To reduce wrinkle formation, the AAD says, sleep on your back. Hand under face can stretch or pull the skin in an unnatural position, pretty hard to control your sleeping position while asleep!
6. Don't squint -- get reading glasses! The AAD says any repetitive facial movement -- like squinting -- overworks facial muscles, forming a groove beneath the skin's surface. This groove eventually becomes a wrinkle. Also important: Wear sunglasses. It will protect skin around the eyes from sun damage -- and further keep you from squinting.
7. Eat more fish -- particularly salmon. Not only is salmon (along with other cold-water fish) a great source of protein -- one of the building blocks of great skin -- it's also an awesome source of an essential fatty acid known as omega-3. Perricone tells WebMD that essential fatty acids help nourish skin and keep it plump and youthful, helping to reduce wrinkles. (And Biomega is beneficial for the skin too!)
8. Eat more soy -- So far, most of the proof has come from animal studies, but research does show certain properties of soy may help protect or heal some of the sun's photoaging damage. In one recent human study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, researchers reported that a soy-based supplement (other ingredients included fish protein and extracts from white tea, grapeseed, and tomato, as well as several vitamins) improved skin's structure and firmness after just six months of use.
9. Trade coffee for cocoa. In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2006, researchers found cocoa containing high levels of two dietary flavanols (epicatchin and catechin) protected skin from sun damage, improved circulation to skin cells, affected hydration, and made the skin look and feel smoother. Coffee dehydrates the skin.
10. Eat more fruits and vegetables. The key, says Klaus, are their antioxidant compounds. These compounds fight damage caused by free radicals (unstable molecules that can damage cells), which in turn helps skin look younger and more radiant, and protects against some effects of photoaging.
11. Use moisturizer. "Women, especially, are so concerned with anti aging products they often overlook the power of a simple moisturizer. Skin that is moist simply looks better, so lines and creases are far less noticeable," says Ashinoff. Choose a skin care line with anti aging ingredients like antioxidants.
12. Don't over-wash your face. According to dermatologists at the University of Maryland Medical Center, tap water strips skin of its natural barrier oils and moisture that protect against wrinkles. Wash them off too often, and you wash away protection. Moreover, unless your soap contains moisturizers, you should use a cleanser instead. Most OTC cleansers contain SLS (detergent) that dries the skin and is irritating for skin.
Topical Treatments That Reduce Wrinkles
Studies show the following ingredients can reduce wrinkles. Most are found in a variety of skin-care treatments, both prescription and over-the-counter.
13. Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). These natural fruit acids lift away the top layer of dead skin cells, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes. New evidence shows that in higher concentrations, AHAs may help stimulate collagen production.
14. Retinoids (including Retin A). The only FDA-approved topical treatment for wrinkles is tretinoin, known commercially as Retin A. Ashinoff says this prescription cream reduces fine lines and large wrinkles, and repairs sun damage. Retinol is a natural form of vitamin A found in many over-the-counter products. Studies show that in a stabilized formula, in high concentrations, it may be as effective as Retin A, without the side effects, such as skin burning and sensitivity.
15. Topical vitamin C. Studies at Tulane University, among others, have found it can increase collagen production, protect against damage from UVA and UVB rays, correct pigmentation problems, and improve inflammatory skin conditions. The key, however, may be the type of vitamin C used. (To date, most of the research points to the L-ascorbic acid form as the most potent for wrinkle relief This is totally wrong, L-Asboric Acid has been known to be unstable, and we know that Sensé has a very powerful Vitamin C in our Proteo C ™)
16. Idebenone. This chemical cousin to the nutrient coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)is a super-powerful antioxidant. In one study published recently in the Journal of Dermatology, doctors found that with just 6 weeks of topical use, there was a 26% reduction in skin roughness and dryness, a 37% increase in hydration, a 29% decrease in lines and wrinkles, and a 33% overall improvement in sun-damaged skin. Other studies have found similar results. Again another error, Idebenone in the quantity used is skin care products is so low it is less effective than most antioxidants. For example Elizabeth Arden only has 0.5% Idebenone, where the original M.D. Forte Skin care sold in Doctors offices has 1%. The company that produces this ingredient claims it is better than Vitamin C-E,Alpha Lipolic Acid Co-Q 10 and Kinetin (plant hormone). The study however did not compare the effects of the ingredients to the many other potent antioxidants and the study only involved 30 subjects! Side Note: Elizabeth Arden's Prevage (Idebenone product) costs $200.00 Canadian the last time I looked.
17. Growth factors. Part of the body's natural wound-healing response, these compounds, when applied topically, may reduce sun damage and decrease lines and wrinkles, while rejuvenating collagen production, studies have shown. I believe I did a report on the pros and cons of Growth factors in skin care.
18. Pentapeptides. According to Lauren Thaman Hodges, associate director of global skin science for Procter & Gamble, the results of a study supported by the National Institutes of Health suggested pentapeptides can increase collagen production in sun-damaged skin. Several subsequent studies (including one presented at a recent national dermatology conference) showed that when topically applied, pentapeptides stimulated collagen production and diminished lines and wrinkles.
Medical/Spa Treatments That Reduce Wrinkles
19. Botox. An injection of this purified version of the A-Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscle just underneath the wrinkle, allowing the skin on top to lie smooth and crease-free.
20. Wrinkle fillers. Doctors fill wrinkles with a variety of substances, including collagen, hyaluronic acid, and other synthetic compounds. Popular treatments include Restylane, Juvaderm, and ArteFill, among others.
21. Laser/light resurfacing. Here, energy from a light source -- either a laser or a pulsed diode light -- removes the top layer of skin, causing a slight but unnoticeable skin "wounding." This kicks the skin's natural collagen-production system into high gear, resulting in smoother, more wrinkle-free skin.
22. Chemical peels. In this treatment, one of a variety of different chemicals is used to "burn" away the top layer of skin, creating damage that causes the body to respond by making more collagen. You end up with younger-looking, smoother skin.
23. Dermabrasion. A vacuum suction device used in tandem with a mild chemical crystal, dermabrasion helps remove the top layer of skin cells and bring new, more evenly textured skin to the surface. In the process, fine lines and wrinkles seem to disappear.
